Our black currant is indeed a nutritional treasure; antioxidants, trace elements, dietary fiber, just some of the nutritional wealth hidden in its wrinkled flesh, enough to convince, even the toughest crowd, of its benefits. Since the ancient times, black currant has been indeed worshipped, as ancient Greeks and Romans used to decorate their temples with black currants and they used it as medicine- especially the Romans- believing that it can heal practically everything.

Our black currant is indeed a nutritional treasure; antioxidants, trace elements, dietary fiber, just some of the nutritional wealth hidden in its wrinkled flesh, enough to convince, even the toughest crowd, of its benefits. The traditional process of drying it passes down from generation to generation, from father to son – it is performed in threshing floors and it brings out all these aspects that make our black currant really popular.

We could literally write a book on the properties of Corinthian black currant.

One of its main features is that it is consumed in its skin and this is why it is so rich in fibers- richer than any other raisin. Furthermore, its distinctive sweet taste comes as a result of its high fructose concentration. Fructose has a lower glycemic index as compared to glycose. As a result, the black currant has a medium glycemic index, which makes it the perfect snack for people suffering from diabetes.

The main characteristics of this variety are the dark dull matt colour, its strong intense taste, which stays for a while after its consumption, as well as the lack of pit, especially in our mountainous region, since our vineyards grow at an average altitude of 850m.

It has been almost a century that this variety of Corinthian black currant has been cultivated in our mountainous village. It started in small fields and by the end of the 20th century it had already covered large parts of our land.
